Description:
This Powerpoint Presentation was used in class with upper intermediate students learning English for Academic Purposes as a guide after reading academic texts in order to review new vocabulary. The objective of the activity was to show students how to find words from the AWL, create lexical sets, and ultimately make online flashcard sets to practice new vocabulary on their own. I presented these slides in class to help students get started making lexical sets using collocations. The goal of this activity, however, was to give students an additional resource to review and learn new vocabulary.
Analyze:
This activity is an example of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in an EAP context. The Power Point Presentation was a way to aid students who may need various ways to acquire new vocabulary and use it with the correct collocations, providing technical support and answering any questions they may have had about language use.
Appraise:
The slides and in class activity motivated students to practice vocabulary and become independent learners since it gave them tools to use on their own when reading any text online. By encouraging students to use dictionaries online and find common collocations, they also learned how to teach themselves academic vocabulary.
Transformation:
By integrating different tools used to learn vocabulary (AWL Highlighter, Dictionaries Online, Quizlet as a Flashcard Generator), I have learned how to involve students in choosing the language they deem necessary in their language learning process –giving them tools to become independent learners. This activity has influenced my approach to teaching vocabulary by encouraging me to revise the usefulness of learning collocations. Furthermore, by encouraging students to make vocabulary flashcards, I have begun exploring different templates and online tools that can be used to assist language learning.
